I’m sure that you’ve heard of, if not seen, The Ten Commandments, Cecil B. DeMille’s Hollywood masterpiece that swept the Academy Awards of 1956. Shot in widescreen Technicolor, it is a star studded movie featuring the likes of Charlton Heston, Yul Bryner, Anne Baxter, Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget, Edward G. Robinson, Vincent Price and John Carradine. The storyline, lifted from the book of Exodus in the Bible, is about how God miraculously delivers the Jews from 400 years of Egyptian bondage via the courageous leadership of Moses. Exodus to Freedom always begins in Egypt … the place of slavery … the experience of bondage. That’s what addiction is: slavery and bondage! Bob called it “a deadly enslavement.”15 As suggested by the Big Book chapter … “Freedom from Bondage”16 … Exodus to Freedom follows the storyline of The Ten Commandments: freedom from addictive bondage via God’s deliverance. Bill wrote: “THE CENTRAL FACT of our lives today is the absolute certainty that our Creator has commenced to accomplish those things for us that we could never do by ourselves.”17 To other alcoholics Bob often spoke these words of encouragement and challenge: "No man need stay the way he is--with God's help, he can throw off the chains of any enslaving habit and be free again to be what God wants him to be!” That’s the focus of Exodus to Freedom! |
